Flavio C. T. Lima – new Scientific Editor of aqua

FLima-lowThis is my very special and warm “Welcome” for Flávio César Thadeo de Lima to be the new scientific editor of aqua, to guide this scientific journal to further worldwide success as all his procedures did, with very hard precise and intensive work.
I know Flávio, one of Heraldo Britski’s preferred students and agree with the ‘father’ of Brazilian ichthyology and taxonomy, that he is one of the best ichthyologists the Brazilian have, and in particular to me, having seen and read his many publications and having been able to know him also as a dear friend.
I did meet Flávio for the first time in the office of Heraldo Britski at the USP in São Paulo in the 1990s, while we were taking about the genera Brycon and Salminus. Heraldo said he had a student working on those, and sure enough in 1997 at the XII Encontro Brasileiro de Ictiologia, São Paulo, São Paulo, he presented the “Revisão das espécies do gênero Brycon Muller & Troschel dos rios do sudeste da América do Sul (Characiformes, Characidae)” together with Haroldo. I was able to give some comments and suggestions and with regards to the genus Salminus I had mentioned to Flávio at this time, that he should talk to the characoid expert of the world, my dear late friend Jacques Géry, in Sarlat, France. I invited to take him there, and Flávio came to Europe, stayed with me in Italy and we drove to see one of the finest ichthyologists that ever lived in his house outside of beautiful Sarlat, where they talked about Salminus and many other taxonomic problems and latter published some papers together.
Flávio was born in São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, on April 9th, 1974 and loved and dedicated to nature from his early age. He made his B. Sc. in Biology, at the Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil between 1993-1998. His M. Sc. in Zoology with: Programa de Pós-Graduação em Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Dissertation “Revisão taxonômica do gênero Brycon Müller & Troschel, 1844 dos rios da América do Sul cisandina (Pisces, Ostariophysi, Characiformes, Characidae)”, being Heraldo A. Britski his advisor in December, 2001. And his Ph. D. in Zoology he received with the revision of the genus Salminus : Programa de Pós-Graduação em Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Thesis: “Revisão taxonômica e relações filogenéticas do gênero Salminus (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae)”, his advisor was again Heraldo A. Britski, and this was in May, 2006.
Interesting is the fact, that of the over 70 papers Flávio has published alone and co-authored, the first two were about Passeriformes: Bettini, G., J. F. Pacheco, A. Aleixo & F. C. T. Lima 1998. New records extend the known range of the Henna-capped Foliage-gleaner (Hylocryptus rectirostris) southeastward (Passeriformes: Furnariidae). Ararajuba, 6 (2): 145-146. And: Lima, F. C. T. 1999. A range extension for the Caatinga Black-tyrant, Knipolegus franciscanus (Tyrannidae), a rare brazilian endemic. Bulletin of the British Ornithologist’s Club, 119 (4): 270-271.
Flávio has published in most of the major scientific journals around the world, including in aqua, and also one with Jacques Géry. His latest paper co-authored with Birindelli, J. L. O., H. A. Britski was in 2013: New species of Leporinus from the Rio Tapajós basin, Brazil, and redescription of L. moralesi (Characiformes: Anostomidae). In Copeia 2013 (2): 238-247. But he also contributed to major works, such as that of the subfamily Bryconinae. Pp. 174-181 in: Reis, R. E., S. O. Kullander & C. J. Ferraris (eds.), Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America. Edipurs, Porto Alegre, 729 pp, in 2003.
Flávio has peer- reviewed scientific papers for most of the major journals and participated in numerous ichthyologic congresses, in many also with posters. Some of his on going projects are the Revision of the cisandean species of the genus Brycon (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae) and also with A. M. Zanata the Revision of the Brycon pesu species complex (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae), and of the genus Thayeria Eigenmann 1908.
His employments included – Part-time curatorial assistant, Fish Section, Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de Paulo. 1998-1999 and Ichthyologist, in the Instituto Socioambiental, São Paulo, 2006-2007. Today Flávio Works at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual de Campinas “Adão José Cardoso, Rua Albert Einstein s/n, Caixa Postal 6109, 13083-863, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.
The team of aqua is very honoured to have Flávio as its new scientific editor and we see forward to a very good mutual cooperation in order to help the scientific and the popular world-community with more excellent papers thoroughly peer-reviewed.
Thank you very much Flávio for accepting.
Heiko Bleher
