Abstract

Females of Alloblennius anuchalis (Springer & Spreitzer, 1978), previously known only from the male holotype, are described and illustrated. They differ from the male, and both sexes of the three other Alloblennius species, in having alternating dark and pale bands in the anal fin. Geographic range extensions are noted for A. anuchalis, A. parvus, and A. pictus. Males of A. parvus from Mauritius, but not Comores, have statistically significantly higher mean numbers of segmented dorsal- and anal-fin rays, and caudal vertebrae, than do females from their respective localities. Colour photographs of all four Alloblennius species are included.
